I keep thinking it's just IRC all over again, but it's sticking around the YC virtual office so I'm gonna put it on the list. It's the way I was able to get Jessica Livingston to finally start using animated GIFs, so it's got that going for it.
@alexisohanian Our team kept trying various productivity tools and none of them felt natural so they didn't stick. Slack was the first tool that instantly became a core part of our collaboration as soon as we started using it.

We started using Slack this week, and it feels like a totally natural fit for collaboration both within teams and for the company as a whole. I think each team will develop slightly different use patterns, which I'm really looking forward to seeing.
