Skim v1.0.13 β€” "Chat, unchained" πŸͺŸ

byβ€’

The one where the AI chat stops living inside a panel and becomes an actual window you can put wherever you like. Also the one where we deleted a setting instead of adding one. πŸŽ‰

✨ New

  • Pop a chat out into its own window β€” hit Ctrl+K in any AI chat (ask, palette, or the folder digest) and it flies off into a frameless window of its own. Drag it to the second monitor, keep reading mail underneath, and it keeps streaming the whole time. πŸš€

  • Close it and it comes home β€” Esc, βœ•, Alt+F4, whatever you press, the conversation slides back inline exactly where it was. No "session expired", no starting over. 🏠

  • Click a citation in a popped-out chat and the actual email opens in the main window β€” which politely un-minimizes itself from the tray instead of making you go find it. πŸ”

  • Open a second, third, fourth chat window β€” they cascade instead of stacking pixel-perfectly on top of each other, which was funny exactly once.

πŸ› Fixed

  • Follow-up questions stop re-searching for mail they already have. The digest marks everything it covered as read, then the follow-up went hunting for unread mail and found… nothing. Now the model gets a list of the emails it already pulled up and just reads them by number. 🧠

  • No more silent empty answers. A model that ran out of tool calls mid-plan used to just… stop, and you got a blank. Now it's told the plan ends here and to answer with what it's got β€” and if it genuinely returns nothing, you get a real error instead of an eloquent void. 🀐

  • Closing a chat window stops the request. Previously the backend cheerfully kept generating (and billing) an answer nobody would ever read. Your API key thanks you. πŸ’Έ

🧹 Housekeeping

  • The AI chat used to exist twice β€” once expanded inside the command palette, once bolted onto the reading pane β€” plus a palette_expanded setting to choose a size. All of it collapsed into one component and one session store: 1,279 lines deleted, and the two copies can never drift apart again. 🧼

  • The old "Expand / Collapse" buttons retired gracefully; a single shared toggle took their place. Farewell, you served us adequately.

  • Translations refreshed across all 12 languages. 🌍

The pop out chat feels like one of those small changes that makes a big difference in day to day use . Also , deleting 1279

lines instead of adding more is always satisfying . Nice release.

Love the focus on workflow here. Keeping a chat on a second monitor while the main app stays usable is a genuinely practical improvement .

I've tested plenty of chat apps, and the biggest frustration for me has always been losing momentum during longer discussions. Skim's "Chat, unchained" instantly caught my attention.

The pop out chat window feels like a really practical update. Being able to keep the conversation open while reading emails on another screen sound much more comfortable.
