How much should a virtual world explain?

by

One design question I keep running into with Sensipets: How much should the game explain to you, versus letting you stumble into things?

Sensipets has a lot of interconnected systems, and I love the feeling of discovering something unexpected. But there’s obviously a point where "mysterious" becomes "I had no idea this feature existed."

I’ve been reworking onboarding and progression around that balance; giving players enough direction to get invested without turning the first hour into a giant tutorial.

When you start a new game, do you prefer clear objectives or being dropped into the world and figuring it out?
