Would you use an expense tracker that works like a notes app?

I'm a computer science student exploring an idea for a personal finance app, and I want to validate it before investing time in building it.

One problem with expense trackers is that logging every transaction can feel tedious. Filling out forms, selecting categories, and entering details can make people stop tracking their expenses altogether.

My idea is to make tracking money as simple as writing a note.

For example, you could type "Spent ₹500 on shopping" or "Received ₹30,000 as salary", and the app would automatically turn your sentence into a structured transaction. The main screen would feel like a journal, with a separate overview to help you understand your spending and income.

I've attached my current UI concept to show how I'm imagining it.

I'd appreciate your honest feedback:

  • Do you currently track your expenses? If so, how?

  • Does manually logging transactions feel like a hassle?

  • Would you actually use an app like this? Why or why not?

  • What would make it genuinely useful compared with existing expense trackers?

I'm just getting started with building products, and I'd rather validate the idea before spending months developing something people don't need. Honest criticism is welcome!

I only build things I use myself every day, because otherwise I can't tell what customers actually need. So my honest question back is whether you'd use it daily yourself. On turning a sentence into a transaction, I'd keep the model's job small. In my own tools I lean on plain code wherever I can, and when a model has to decide something, a second model checks it.
