Why is GST invoicing still so painful in India? 🇮🇳
I spent months talking to Indian freelancers, consultants, and small business owners before building GSTMaker. One question kept coming up:
"Why does something as simple as sending an invoice take 20 minutes?"
Here's what I found:
The real problems nobody talks about:
Zoho and ClearTax are built for accountants — not for a freelance developer who just wants to send one invoice to a client. The learning curve is insane.
Free tools are a trap — full of ads, broken PDF exports, and zero GST compliance. I've seen freelancers send invoices with wrong CGST/SGST splits and not even know it.
Tally requires installation + training — in 2026, nobody should need a 3-day course to generate a PDF.
Most tools require signup before you can even try — why? Just let me make one invoice first.
So I built GSTMaker.
One goal: create a GST-compliant invoice in under 60 seconds. No signup. No bloat. Free.
What surprised me after launch:
- Users were coming for the invoice tool but staying for the free GST tools (calculator, GSTIN validator, HSN finder, AI legal advisor)
- The #1 feedback was: "This is the first tool that didn't make me feel stupid"
- 90% of our users are first-time GST filers — not accountants
My question to the PH community:
If you've dealt with GST invoicing in India (or tax invoicing in your country) — what was your biggest frustration? And what made you finally switch tools?
Would love to hear real experiences — it directly shapes what we build next. 🙏
