VoxScribe: free voice typing that never leaves your device

by•

Hi all. VoxScribe is free, open-source voice typing for Windows and Android. You talk, and your words are typed into whatever app you're using. Speech recognition runs on your own computer or phone with Whisper, so your voice is never uploaded, and there's no account or subscription.

On Windows you hold a key (F9 by default) anywhere and talk. It also turns audio and video files into text and .srt captions. On Android a small floating button appears above your keyboard in any app, and it keeps working in airplane mode. Both have voice commands like "scratch that", word replacements for names it keeps mishearing, and an optional "send it" that sends a chat message for you.

The core is MIT licensed. An optional one-time $14 Pro adds bigger models and automation extras, but everything above is free.

The Android version launches here on Product Hunt on 31 October, and I'd rather fix things now than on launch day. Three questions for anyone willing to try it:

  1. What's the first thing you'd dictate with it, and did it get that right?

  2. Where did setup lose you, if anywhere? On Android it needs three permissions, and I'm never sure the explanations land.

  3. Would you trust an offline app like this with your messages and notes, and if not, what would change that?
