I built VisuDock: A local-first desktop app in Python & OpenCV for live camera OCR and ANPR

by•

Hi everyone!

I built VisuDock Live OCR—a local-first Windows desktop app that turns CCTV cameras, webcams, RTSP streams, and desktop feeds into real-time text and license plate (ANPR) monitors.

Why I Built It:

Most commercial camera OCR and ANPR solutions require expensive monthly cloud fees and transmit private feeds over the internet. I wanted an offline desktop tool that operates locally with low latency and zero cloud dependency.

Key Features:

- Universal Input Support: Connects to RTSP/ONVIF cameras, USB webcams, HLS streams (.m3u8), WebRTC/MJPEG feeds, local video files, and Screen/Window Capture.

- Smart Performance: Features static-scene detection to skip OCR when no motion occurs, saving CPU. Uses embedded go2rtc for live feeds.

- Offline OCR Engine: RapidOCR handles text/digit recognition and license plate logging with blacklist/whitelist matching entirely offline.

- Multi-Channel Alerts: Instant audio beeps, desktop pop-ups, Email (Gmail), or Telegram messages, along with CSV logging.

You can check out the app and documentation here:

I would love to hear feedback from the Product Hunt community—what features or integrations would you like to see next?
