7-day post-mortem: what I learned launching solo on PH (real numbers)

by•

Hey đź‘‹

Launched JobPilot AI on PH 7 days ago — solo indie from Ukraine 🇺🇦. Just wrote a candid post-mortem about everything that worked and didn't:

Big surprises from week 1:

PH gave 47% of total traffic

HN second-submission got shadow-banned

TinyLaunch approved on attempt #2 after fixing language detection

Got my first Ko-fi tip today đź’š

Wrote it for other solo makers thinking about launching. AMA if anything's unclear.

Wow, thanks for sharing the candid post‑mortem, the stats are eye‑opening and your resilience is inspiring. I’m gearing up to launch The Sponge, an AI‑powered flashcard app that turns any webpage into study material, on PH soon. If you’re up for it, I’d love a follow (see "PRODUCT HUNT LAUNCH" link in my profile).

Thanks @rianbrob 🙏 Glad the post-mortem was useful - that's exactly why I wrote it (most launch recaps online are victory laps, which isn't very helpful to the next person).

The Sponge sounds cool - converting webpages into flashcards is a niche I'd actually use. Followed your profile, will hit notify on launch day. When are you scheduling it?

If you want a second pair of eyes on your launch checklist (timing, copy, comment strategy), happy to share what worked / what didn't from my side. DM anytime.

@mythic_dd I'm aiming to launch in the next couple of weeks—just wrapping up the mobile apps so I can drop them at the same time.

I’m also trying to line up a hunter beforehand, though honestly, I’m not even sure how much weight that carries these days lol.

@rianbrob From my fresh experience (launched 7 days ago without a hunter): hunters help less than people think IF you have your own audience to bring.

What actually mattered for me in week 1:

  1. Pre-launch list (notify-me subscribers) - I got ~50, half of them upvoted on launch day

  2. Time of day - I went 10:01 Kyiv (00:01 PT). PH algorithm favors early-day momentum

  3. Responding to every comment within 1h - keeps your product in "new comments" feed

  4. Cross-channel push - LinkedIn at launch, Show HN at +5h, Reddit later. Don't dump all at once

A good hunter brings their followers, sure - but if your product is for devs/makers, a thoughtful self-launch with a strong tagline often outperforms a celebrity hunter posting "Cool tool đź‘€"

What's the core hook for The Sponge? "Any webpage → flashcards" is good but doesn't say WHY (learning faster? memorizing docs? exam prep?). Sharpening that one sentence helps more than finding a hunter.

Two weeks is plenty of time. DM me 48h before launch if you want a final-checks pass.

@lucky_plant Welcome!

Will be good if you try and make some feedback about it. Thanks!

@mythic_dd I did. I like the idea but its too crowed it the website and makes you feel uncomfortable at least. If I have found it elsewhere I would have thought it's a spam and move away. I would consider keeping the main idea and create a clean interface. Ask for upload resume, then see results fetched and info etc and after that the positions. Clean, fast, efficient. You give value in 5seconds and you dont over complicate things.
