Relay - Stop giving clients your personal number

by•
My clients had my personal number, and they used it on Sundays. I run a few ventures, each needing its own line, with freelancers who had to call from them. Every app wanted $19-40 per person, per month. So I built my own on Twilio instead, and it just worked flawlessly. Relay is business phone and SMS on your own telecom account, at cost. Free for solo freelancers who want a real business number: about a dollar a month from Twilio, nothing to me. Team plans from $17 CAD, that's it.

Hi Product Hunt, I'm Mathieu, a solopreneur in Quebec. For years my clients had my personal cell number. Which meant they used it. Saturday morning, Sunday night, in the middle of dinner. I never really blamed them for it. I'd handed them the only number I had. So I went looking for a business line. And then a second one, because I run a few different ventures and each one needed its own. And then more, because I work with freelancers who had to make calls on behalf of those ventures, and they shouldn't be handing out their personal numbers either. Every app I found wanted $19 to $40 USD a month, per person. Multiply that by people, then by ventures, and it stops being a phone bill and starts being a payroll line. Meanwhile I knew what the actual telecom underneath costs: a number is about a dollar a month from Twilio. So one weekend I stopped shopping and built a small thing for myself. My own Twilio account, my own numbers, a browser app on top. And it just worked. Flawlessly, for months. My ventures each had a real line, my freelancers could call from the right one, and my personal number went back to being personal. That's when it stopped feeling like a private tool. If bringing your own account works this well, why is nobody selling it that way? So here's Relay. The part I care about most: it's free for solo freelancers. One number, calls, call history. You connect your own Twilio or Telnyx account, and that number costs you about a dollar a month from them, plus whatever you actually use. Not to me. I take zero margin on your telecom and I don't intend to ever. If you're a freelancer who doesn't want the client calling on Sunday, that's the whole pitch. Get a real business number, hand that one out, and take your own phone back. Paid plans start at $17 CAD when you need a team, SMS, several ventures under one roof. They include 3 to 15 seats depending on plan, and seats past that are $3 to $7 rather than another $30. I won't tell you there's no per-seat component, because there is one. It's just small, and it shrinks as you grow. Honest on day one: this is me and a lot of late nights. Native mobile apps aren't ready. The AI receptionist is built but I'm not selling it as done until I've proven it on real calls. What I'd love from you: if you've ever given a client your personal number and regretted it, tell me what you did about it. And tell me where this falls apart past 25 people, because that's as far as I've modelled it.
