Backlinks Still Work in 2026 — But the Rules Have Changed
The data is clear: backlinks are still a valuable part of any SEO strategy. Nearly 70% of marketers say backlinks have a "big impact" on search rankings, and 30% say they have a "moderate impact". The top result in Google SERPs has nearly 4x more backlinks than positions two through ten. Marketers are spending $5,000–$10,000 monthly on link building, and a single low-authority link now runs around $300 — almost 8% higher than last year.
But the game has changed.
What's Different in 2026
1. Backlinks are a gate, not a dial. A Semrush study of 1,000 domains found that authority score correlated with AI mentions at Pearson 0.65. Raw backlink volume correlated much more weakly. Low-authority domains collect a handful of citations; top-tier domains collect dozens. The relationship is threshold-shaped.
2. The split between SEO and GEO is real. Backlinks influence AI visibility almost entirely through the retrieval layer — the live search index that grounds AI answers — and almost not at all through the parametric layer. That's why studies measuring pure ChatGPT answers find links matter less, while studies measuring AI Overviews or Perplexity find they matter more. Different machines.
3. Google now evaluates links in real time. Low-quality links are ignored instead of penalized. For competitive eCommerce queries, backlinks remain one of the clearest ways to separate two pages with similar content.
What Still Works
Quality over volume. Less than 8% of marketers believe backlinks are still just a numbers game. Search engines and AI platforms reward diversity as a sign of genuine authority.
Nofollow links are valuable. More than half of SEO professionals believe nofollow links have improved their rankings. In AI search, nofollow links are often just as important as dofollow links.
Image backlinks deserve more attention. Perplexity and ChatGPT Search favor them, and Gemini also shows a noticeable correlation.
Listicle placements and brand mentions are among the most valuable backlinks for both SEO and AI visibility. Structured listicle mentions on pages already pulled into AI search do more heavy lifting than a pile of plain links ever did.
The Big Shift: Brand Mentions Now Rival Backlinks
AI platforms were never built around links. They can use non-linked content — discussions, reviews, podcast mentions, social mentions — to learn about your brand and assess trust signals.
What matters for your brand is building consistency and credibility across both linked and non-linked sources.
YouTube mentions are the strongest correlated signal for AI visibility across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and AI Overviews — outperforming backlinks, domain authority, and content volume
Brand mentions correlate 3x more strongly with AI visibility than backlinks (Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands)
Unlinked brand mentions on Reddit and YouTube are growing to be just as important as traditional backlinks
Entity SEO: The Framework That Connects Everything
All of these trends come together under entity SEO — a strategy that's gaining substantial momentum in the AI search era. Marketers have been using this strategy to map relationships, not just links, to their brands. Search interest in the strategy has grown by more than 1,000% in recent months.
When you reframe backlinks as part of entity SEO, an unlinked mention on Reddit could be just as valuable as a dofollow link on a site with a mid-level DA score. Reddit appears as a source in 3% of AI citations — and more than 80% of those answer decision‑seeking prompts, like head‑to‑head brand comparisons.
What works now:
Data-rich content — original surveys and insights improve your chances of earning high-quality backlinks and appearing in AI search
Brand consistency across the web — AI engines reward brands that are consistently mentioned and described across multiple sources
Every mention — not just every backlink — is a chance to build the kind of authority that search engines and AI platforms recognize and reward
The Bottom Line
Backlinks haven't stopped working. They feed Google's core ranking, and that ranking still influences which pages an AI model encounters and trusts. But in 2026, the goal is no longer "collect as many links as possible." The goal is "become the brand AI trusts enough to cite."
The brands that win will treat backlinks as one signal among many — not the only signal. They'll earn unlinked brand mentions. They'll build entity clarity. They'll show up consistently across the web, linked or not.
What I'm curious about: What's your current backlink strategy? Are you still chasing DA, or are you focused on earning unlinked brand mentions and entity signals?

honest question since this is a first comment and there's a lot of very specific numbers here - the Pearson 0.65 correlation, the 1,000-domain Semrush study, the 75,000-brand Ahrefs study, "grown by more than 1,000%" - none of these are linked. for a post that's arguing against chasing vanity metrics, it would help to actually be able to click through to the studies rather than take the stats on faith. do you have links to the original Semrush and Ahrefs studies, or is this a summary compiled from a few different sources without one canonical link?
@galdayan Fair question — you're right to ask. I've added a full sources section at the end of the article with direct links to the original Semrush, Ahrefs, and other studies so you can verify the numbers yourself.
Appreciate you calling that out — I should have included them from the start. Let me know if anything else needs sourcing.
