👋 Product Hunt, I'm River, the indie developer behind Puffins. For more than 15 years I've been building Dictionariez, an open-source browser extension for looking up words in whatever dictionaries you actually trust. It grew alongside a community of learners, readers and translators, and most of what it does today came from their feedback. But more and more of my own reading and language learning moved to my phone, and there was nothing like it there. I kept juggling a browser tab for Wiktionary, another for a bilingual dictionary and an app for AI, and losing my train of thought every time. So after months of work, I brought Dictionariez to mobile, and that's Puffins. The idea behind it is simple: your language, your dictionary. No app should decide which dictionary is "right" for you. Puffins gives you as much control as I could build in: Pick, reorder and switch between 1000+ dictionaries in 20+ languages Add any dictionary website yourself, or install ones the community has shared Set it up as simply or as deeply as you like When a dictionary entry isn't enough, AI Lookup explains nuance and gives examples. As I've promised from the start, the core is free: every dictionary, every lookup, no ads, no tracking. Only AI Lookup is paid, because each answer costs real AI and server fees. It's on Android today, and the iPhone version is in public beta on TestFlight. I'd love to hear from you: which dictionary could you never learn without? And if something feels missing, tell me. That's how Dictionariez got good, and it's how Puffins will too. 🙏
