PressDeck - Turn Android volume buttons into useful shortcuts

by•
PressDeck turns supported Volume Up and Volume Down double presses and long presses into shortcuts for actions you choose, including launching apps, controlling media, opening Android settings, toggling the flashlight, or asking Android to take a system screenshot. Unlike a general macro engine, it stays focused and deterministic. A guided compatibility test checks what your device can support, and accepted button events are processed on-device.

Hey Product Hunt! I built PressDeck because I kept wanting my phone's physical buttons to do a little more without turning the phone into a giant automation project. The basic idea is simple: supported double presses and long presses on Volume Up and Volume Down can trigger shortcuts like launching an app, controlling media, toggling the flashlight, opening useful Android settings, or asking Android to take a system screenshot. The harder part was making that behavior responsible on Android. Hardware keys can behave differently depending on the manufacturer, device state, audio route, and Android build. Rather than claim that every shortcut works everywhere, PressDeck includes a guided compatibility test and shows when a capability has not been verified on that device. I also deliberately kept the scope small. PressDeck is not a macro engine. There are no automation chains, no PressDeck account, no ads, and no analytics. Accepted button events used for mappings are processed locally on the device. PressDeck uses Android's AccessibilityService specifically for supported physical-key filtering. It does not read screen content or typed text. I'd especially love feedback on two things: what action would you actually assign to your volume buttons, and which Android phones should I prioritize testing next?
