We launched Oscar for FreeCAD today: describe a part, get an editable CAD model. Ask me anything 👋

Hi everyone 👋 I'm Abhishek, hunting Oscar for FreeCAD, which launched today.

Oscar is an AI copilot that lives inside FreeCAD, the free and open-source CAD app. You describe a part in plain words:

"An 80 mm flange, 8 mm thick, with six M6 holes on a 60 mm circle."

Oscar plans it, sketches it, builds it as real FreeCAD features and checks it. Every dimension goes into a parameter spreadsheet, so changing the thickness from 8 to 12 mm updates the part. You don't start over.

What we cared about most:

🔧 Editable CAD you can keep working on: sketches, pads, pockets and holes. It exports STEP for machining and STL for printing.

👀 It shows its work. You see each step as it happens, then a summary of what it checked and what it didn't. On a snap-fit Raspberry Pi 4 case, the fit check came back 10 PASS, 1 WARN, 0 FAIL, and it told us the warning was because it used catalog data instead of a STEP file.

🔓 No lock-in. FreeCAD is free, Oscar is open source (Apache-2.0), and you choose the AI: an OriginShape account, your own API key, or a local model through Ollama or LM Studio.

Two questions I'd love your answers to:

1. What's the first part you'd describe?

2. Where would you NOT trust an AI in your CAD work?

I'll reply to everyone today, and blunt feedback is very welcome.
