The 5 governance questions every AI founder should answer before launch

by•

I've noticed that most founders spend a lot of time asking whether an AI agent works and much less time asking what happens after people start relying on it.

Before launching, I'd want clear answers to five questions:

1. What can the agent access?

Data access tends to expand over time. It's worth knowing exactly which systems, documents, and information sources are within reach.

2. What can the agent change?

Reading information and modifying information are very different levels of responsibility.

3. Which actions require human sign-off?

Not every decision carries the same level of risk. Some actions deserve an extra checkpoint.

4. What gets recorded?

If a customer, teammate, or stakeholder asks how something happened three months from now, there should be a way to reconstruct the path that led there.

5. How will you know when behavior changes?

Agentic systems evolve through new prompts, tools, models, data sources, and workflow updates. Small changes can have surprisingly large effects over time.

None of these questions are particularly technical. They are product, operational, and business questions. The interesting part is that they're often asked only after an AI system becomes important.

If you can't answer these five clearly, your agent may not be production-ready.

Which of these questions is hardest for early-stage teams to answer today?
