Metis - Every word you look up becomes a card you'll remember

by•
Metis is for people who already speak a second language or are learning one but keep forgetting the words they look up: idioms, slang, phrasal verbs, the expressions natives use. Search a word or phrase in either language and Metis builds a card with the translation, meaning and a real example. Spaced repetition brings it back at 1, 2, 4 and 7 days, in four review styles, until you know it. You can also share them with your friends. iPhone widget, 21 interface languages, free plan.

Hi Product Hunt, I'm Iurie, and I built Metis on my own. Metis starts from a small, familiar moment when you're learning a language: you look up a word, it makes sense, and a day later it's gone. That happens most with the words dictionaries handle worst: idioms, slang and the everyday expressions people use when they mean something. Translation apps answer once and forget you asked. Flashcard apps make you build the deck by hand. Metis does both in one step. Every lookup becomes a card, and the card comes back until it sticks. A few details: - Type the word in either language. The card is always in the one you're learning. - Reviews come at 1, 2, 4 and 7 days. A word counts as learned when you recall it after a full week. A miss repeats the same interval; it never sends you back to the start. - Reviews mix flashcards, multiple choice, meaning-to-word and fill-in-the-blank. The wrong options come from your own words, so you're recalling, not guessing. - You can send a word to a friend, or challenge them on it. - Cards work across more than 50 languages, and the app itself is translated into 21. It's iPhone-only for now; Android is in closed testing (anyone that wants to join feel free to reach out!). The free plan covers one language. Premium adds more languages, unlimited words and the home screen widgets. I'd love feedback on the first few minutes: does your first card feel worth keeping? I'm here all day to answer questions.
