What do you need from a Cognitive Core on a Gateway API ?

I work on Secure Gateways with Cognitive cores and ask myself what do people need?

Is it a full platform that works alone? Or a place where you pic the missing point for your own system?

What also do people want to have from it?

That are big questions that hold me awake all time.
