Introducing LAN Orangutan: self-hosted network discovery that stays simple

We’re launching LAN Orangutan on Product Hunt tomorrow, and wanted to properly introduce it here first.

LAN Orangutan is a self-hosted tool that scans your network and shows you every device on it, all from a clean web dashboard or the command line. We built it because the existing options felt like two extremes: bare command-line utilities on one end, and heavy, complex monitoring platforms that take real effort to set up on the other. We wanted the thing in the middle that just works, with almost no setup.

What it does:

• Auto-discovers every device on your network with nmap (IP, MAC, and vendor)

• Lets you label, group, and add notes to devices, and they persist across scans

• Scans multiple networks at once

• Picks up your Tailscale peers automatically

• Gives you a modern web dashboard with light and dark mode, plus a full CLI with JSON output

• Ships as a single binary with no dependencies on Linux, macOS, and Windows

It’s free and open source (MIT), built by 291 Group. Our whole philosophy is to keep it the simplest, fastest way to see what’s on your network, and we ship updates weekly.
