Hi, I’m Shabir, a B2B sales guy spending his evenings reading launch pages
by•
I’ve worked in sales and marketing for a little over five years, mostly B2B. A big part of my job is figuring out why a lead who was excited last week suddenly goes quiet. More often than not, they liked the product and just couldn’t explain it to their boss.
That’s what pulled me to Product Hunt. Makers here have to explain what they built in one line, and the good ones do it better than most sales decks I’ve seen. I joined a few days ago and so far I’m mostly reading taglines and taking notes.
For those who’ve launched: did you write your tagline first, or did it only click after talking to users?

Welcome Shabir, and "they liked it but could not explain it to their boss" is a great way to put it. For my app the one line came after, and not from talking but from search data. App Store search ads and keyword research show you the exact words people type, and they surprised me. I expected gift phrases like "birthday song" to be big, and almost nobody searches them. The plain category words are searched far more, so those words stayed in the app's name. The catch is that the generic words brought mostly young people making a song for themselves, while the people who pay are older and come for an occasion. So a tagline has two jobs: use the words people search, and speak to the person you actually want.
