I Thought I Built a Gamified Finance App… But It Felt Like a Reskinned Tracker
I got some honest feedback on my app today—and it stuck with me.
Someone said it feels like “just an expense tracker with a reskin.”
At first that stings. But after sitting with it, they’re probably right.
The system is there: XP, ranks, quests, progression.
But if users don’t feel that in the first few minutes, then it might as well not exist.
That’s on me.
The real issue:
The experience isn’t clear when you first open the app.
There’s no strong guidance. No obvious first move. No moment that signals “this is a system.”
So instead of feeling like a game… it feels like a tool.
And tools don’t hook people. Systems do.
What I’m realizing:
Gamification isn’t about adding XP or achievements.
It’s about shaping the experience so users feel progression immediately.
If the first interaction is confusing or passive, the whole concept falls apart.
What I’m changing next:
A clear “first quest” on app open
Guided steps instead of a blank start
Simpler explanations for non-finance users
The goal:
Not just to help people track money—but to make it feel like they’re playing their finances.
Still a lot to improve. But this kind of feedback is exactly what moves the product forward.
