A local file path is not a share link

by•

I'm part of the GJ File Manager team. Two files can have the same name in different folders. Before sending instructions to someone else, check which location you actually mean.

In GJ File Manager on Mac, clicking the current folder path copies that directory location. For an individual file, open its context menu and choose Get Info to inspect the full path. Those answer different questions: where the folder is, and which item you selected.

A useful handoff check:

  1. Paste the copied directory path into a note and confirm the parent folder. If you need a particular file, include its exact name as well.

  2. Decide whether the recipient shares that location. A path on your own Mac usually will not resolve on another person's computer, and pasting it into a message grants no access.

  3. If they need the file itself, deliver the actual item through an appropriate sharing method, then check that they can open it. Copying a path does not copy the contents.

When collaborating, which would be more useful in a path-copy confirmation: an explicit 'folder path' label or a reminder that the path is local?
