Google Safe Browsing, explained for getowl customers

If you share short links at scale, you've probably seen it: Chrome shows a red interstitial, or a status page says your short domain is "unsafe." That signal almost always comes from Google Safe Browsing — not from your dashboard being down.
This post explains what that means for getowl customers, how we protect your links, and what to do if a domain you use gets flagged.
What Google Safe Browsing is
Safe Browsing is Google's reputation system for the open web. Chrome, Search, and many other products use it to warn people about phishing, malware, and unwanted software.
It evaluates sites and URLs, not "is this company's product online." A short-link domain like go.getowl.ai or your branded domain (links.yourbrand.com) can be flagged when some destinations behind it look harmful — even if most of your links are fine.
Google's Transparency Report often phrases this as:

Why short-link domains get flagged more easily
Shorteners and link hubs concentrate many destinations under one hostname. Attackers abuse that pattern. Defenders (including Google) watch those hostnames carefully.
A single malicious destination — a phishing form, a fake login, malware download — can taint reputation for the whole short domain, including legitimate campaigns that share it.
That's why destination quality matters as much as link UX.

If a destination matches known phishing, malware, or unwanted software:

What this means for you as a customer
Operational outage ≠ Safe Browsing flag.
If status shows Web application and Redirect edge as operational but Safe Browsing as flagged, clicks still work — visitors may see browser warnings until reputation recovers.
Your branded domain is your brand.
Custom domains (go.yourbrand.com) inherit the same risk: only shorten destinations you trust. Treat link destinations like email attachments from strangers.
Rules destinations count too.
Geo, device, and A/B targets are destinations. A clean default URL with a bad geo rule target can still cause problems.
Practical checklist
Only shorten URLs you control or have vetted — landing pages, docs, store listings, known partners.
Avoid pasting raw URLs from DMs / unknown ads into getowl.
Audit old links if a domain gets flagged — find destinations that were changed after creation or that aged into shady redirects.
Disable or retarget anything suspicious immediately.
Request a review with Google after cleanup (Search Console / Safe Browsing review for the affected property). Reputation doesn't flip overnight; cleanup first, then review.

If your visitors see a Chrome warning
Confirm which hostname is warned (go.getowl.ai vs your custom domain).
In getowl, find recent links and rule destinations on that host; remove or replace risky targets.
Submit Google's site review after the bad URLs are gone.
Prefer your verified custom domain for customer-facing campaigns once it's clean — brand trust compounds.
