I have seen a lot of people post on here purely for engagement, likes and followers. Is that actually necessary to get legitimate feedback on a release, or am I just feeding the algorithm what it wants?

I think there is a difference between posting for empty engagement and participating enough for the right people to discover what you built.
The algorithm can help with visibility, but legitimate feedback usually comes from asking specific questions. Instead of “What do you think of my product?” ask where someone became confused, what they expected before trying it, or what would stop them from using it again.
Engagement may get people through the door, but the quality of the question determines whether the feedback is actually useful.
