What's a dull industry that you'd love to make software for?
One of the threads I have seen lately, about an order tracking system for a bakery is stuck in my head mainly because of the size of the problem. It keeps reminding me how a good idea for software lies in a boring business. A driving school trying to schedule the instructors with cars available on a single calendar. A laundromat owner who wants to be aware of the broken machine without going through all the machines. A tutor sending invoices via text messages manually every month.
None of them are an ideal pitch deck, but each of these problems has someone who is annoyed and willing to pay for getting rid of that annoyance.
I have begun noting small gripes I have heard: a barber losing appointments due to missed phone calls, a neighbor running a plant nursery on a spreadsheet. Who knows which one, if any, will become a project.
What is the most humble enterprise you know that can benefit from some good software? And if you have made some software for such an enterprise, how did you approach its owner?
