The product I stopped using and could not say why
I cancelled something last week and I could not explain to the founder why. Not because the reason was complicated. Because it was embarrassing. The product worked fine. I just stopped opening it.
That is the most common kind of churn and almost none of it gets reported honestly. People say price or features or a competitor. The real answer is usually that a habit never formed. The product was fine and it was not quite the shape of my day.
I have started trying to be more honest when I leave something, because I know how valuable that email is on the other side. But it is hard to write "nothing was wrong, I just drifted away" to someone who spent years building it.
The uncomfortable part is that I do the same thing with my own users. I get clean, polite reasons and I have to guess at what is underneath.
Have you ever cancelled something and told them the real reason? And has anyone ever told you the real reason they left you?
