The Feature I Removed That People Still Thank Me For

by•

I deleted something last year. Took it out of the product entirely, removed the menu item, wrote a short note explaining why, and braced for the complaints.

They never came. What came instead was a slow trickle of messages from people saying the product finally felt clear.

One person told me they'd been avoiding a section of the app for months because they didn't understand it, and once it was gone they stopped feeling like they were using it wrong.

I'd spent two years adding things because adding felt like progress. Removing felt like admitting a mistake. But the deletion did more for how people felt about the product than the previous ten features combined.

The hard part is that removal doesn't show up anywhere. There's no launch post, no changelog entry anyone reads, no way to point at it and say look what I did. It's invisible work that improves everything and earns nothing.

Have you ever cut something and had people thank you for it? And how do you talk yourself into deleting when adding still feels safer?
