Orkut is looking for a new social networking site. What make you change from your existing feeds?
This week's Product Hunt highlights include something that has stayed with me. The creator of Orkut is now talking about making a new social network, and the idea behind it appears to be that current feeds suck compared to what we had.
It's a little mixed for me. Nostalgia is a good sales tool, but it won't make anyone leave the app where all their friends are. Orkut failed against Facebook not because of the features, but because all your cousins switched overnight.
If I were to create a product, I would avoid trying to build a wide network and instead focus on a smaller community - a book club, a development team, a neighborhood. Discord has grown because it started with small communities within the gaming industry way back when.
What would make you move? Do you need friends who are already there? Privacy? Lack of an algorithmic feed? In all honesty, I would only move if three people that I talk to on a weekly basis moved there first, which is a bit unnerving about how social products truly work.
I am curious to hear from anyone who has witnessed a platform being built or failing firsthand. What was the profile of those first hundred users?

Do you think a new social network can succeed by focusing on one niche community first?
