Is retention a product value problem or just a missing habit trigger?

by

We spent weeks perfecting our onboarding process thinking that friction was keeping users from returning . But after chatting with a few inactive users, the feedback was eye opening they understood the app completely and found it helpful but they just didn't have a reason to open it again.

It made me realize there's a huge gap between making something useful and making it essential to someone's workflow.

How did you figure out what kept your early users coming back did you find the answer through retention metrics direct calls or just testing different ideas?

I think useful and has a reason to open an app tomorrow are two completely different tests.

I’m building a consumer self-reflection app now, and this is probably the question I think about most. You can have a great first experience and still have zero habit.

What seems to work really well here are emotional triggers. Especially at the beginning: the user does very little... and gets a lot back. A small action, but a surprisingly good feeling or useful result. (that why roulettes and hyper casual games are so popular even they are so dummy)
