Are we in a demo culture?

by

I open Product Hunt regularly and every product looks incredible.

Perfect landing page. Perfect Loom video. Perfect story — "Built in 7 days with AI, 1000 users in 48 hours."

I try 5-6 a day. And honestly, most of them are impressive for the first 5 minutes. The onboarding is slick, the UI is clean, the demo makes you go "wow."

Then I never open them again.

And I realized I'm guilty of the same thing as a builder.

AI made it too easy to ship something that looks done. Landing page in an hour. Demo video in 20 minutes. Waitlist in a day. You get that dopamine hit of "this feels real."

But the hard part was never the demo.

The hard part is Day 2, Day 7, Day 30. Does someone change their existing workflow for this? Do they come back without a reminder email? Would they pay? Would they tell a friend without you asking?

It feels like we're all getting really good at optimizing for launch day — upvotes, comments, badges, Twitter threads. And we're getting worse at optimizing for retention, for habit, for actually being a painkiller.

I've caught myself polishing the landing page copy before the core loop even retains.

So I'm curious — how do you break out of it?

How do you know when you're building a real product vs just a really polished demo?

What do you do to force yourself to focus on Day 30 instead of launch day?

Would love to hear how others are thinking about this.
