Hey Product Hunt! 👋 I'm Jun, the maker of Fur Baby Companion. I built this app for one simple reason: the "1 pet year = 7 human years" rule is wrong. A 1-year-old Chihuahua is roughly 15 in human years. A 1-year-old Great Dane? About 17. By age 5, that gap widens dramatically. Most pet apps use rough estimates — I wanted to build one that uses actual veterinary science. A few things I'm proud of: • Age conversion based on guidelines from 6 veterinary associations (AVMA, AAFP/AAHA, ARBA, ASMVP, AAV, AFA) • 9 species supported — from dogs (4 sizes!) to reptiles • Custom wallpapers you can save to your lock screen • A memory journal that actually feels good to use • 100% offline — your pet data never leaves your phone This is a labor of love. I have two fur babies of my own (a dog named Dodger and a cat named Coco), and this app helps me cherish every day with them. Happy to answer any questions about the vet science, the tech (SwiftUI + SwiftData), or anything else! Oh, and if you're a pet parent — what species should I add next? 🐾

how does the age conversion actually work for reptiles? mine is a leopard gecko and the 7 year rule never made sense for him, curious what data you used for the non traditional pets

Great question! For reptiles, the challenge is that there's no single veterinary organization (like AVMA for dogs/cats) that publishes a standardized reptile-to-human age framework. A leopard gecko (~15 year lifespan) ages very differently from a ball python (~30 years) or a tortoise (~80+ years).

We chose to be honest and show "--" rather than fake it with an inaccurate formula. For reptiles, the app still tracks real age, milestone reminders, and memories — it just doesn't guess at human-equivalent years.

If you have a specific conversion rate in mind for your leopard gecko, you can use the Custom species option with your own rate (e.g., 4x would map a 15-year gecko lifespan to ~60 human years). That said — we'd love to add proper reptile support. Any reptile vet guidelines you'd recommend?

**Q: Where do the age formulas come from?**

> All formulas are based on published veterinary association guidelines:
> - Dog: AVMA (4 size categories)
> - Cat: AVMA / AAFP-AAHA Feline Life Stage Guidelines
> - Rabbit: ARBA (American Rabbit Breeders Association)
> - Guinea Pig & Hamster: ASMVP (Association of Small Mammal Veterinarians)
> - Parrot: AAV (Association of Avian Veterinarians, 3 sizes)
> - Ferret: AFA (American Ferret Association)

> No "7-year rule" here — each species gets its own science-backed curve.
