Musicians: can you actually hear a chord change, or did you learn to read first?

I've been building an ear training app and the thing I keep running into is that most of us learn notation years before we learn to hear anything. I could read music long before I could work out a song by ear.

Curious how it went for you — did ear training come first, later, or never? And if you tried an app for it, what made you quit?
