Crate - See what's inside an archive before you unzip it
by•
Crate opens zip, 7z, rar and tar archives in a window like a Finder folder, so you can preview files with Space and drag out only the ones you need. It also opens .docx, .epub, .apk and other files that are zips underneath. Free and open source, about 3 MB.

Hi Product Hunt! Archive Utility extracts the whole archive the moment you double-click it, and most of the time I only want one or two files out of it. So I made Crate. It opens an archive in a window like a Finder folder, where you can sort, search, Quick Look a file with Space and drag out what you need.
It reads zip, 7z, rar, tar and iso files and split .001 archives, plus files that are zips underneath like .docx, .epub and .apk. It can also create zip, 7z and tar archives, with a password for zip and an option to split into volumes.
It uses the libarchive that ships with macOS, so the app is about 3 MB and has no other dependencies. The code is on GitHub under the MIT license, and the app is notarized.
One limit I couldn't work around: the libarchive in macOS can't decrypt encrypted 7z or rar files, so you can see what's in them but not extract them.
I'd like to know which formats or Finder actions you'd want next.
