How should location-sharing apps balance real-time tracking, battery life, and privacy?

Building cMe has made me think a lot about a trade-off that almost every location-sharing app faces:

How do you provide useful real-time location updates without unnecessarily draining battery, using too much mobile data, or compromising privacy?

My current approach with cMe is to make location sharing adaptive rather than continuously aggressive.

cMe uses motion-aware location handling so GPS activity can be reduced when a device is not moving, and location behavior can adapt as movement changes. It also uses demand-driven synchronization: high-frequency real-time location updates are prioritized when someone is actually viewing a group, instead of continuously transmitting the same type of data when nobody is watching.

cMe - Live location sharing for families and groups

cMe is a privacy-focused location sharing app for families, friends, trips, events, and outdoor groups. Share live GPS locations, view location history, and manage groups across iPhone, Android, and the web. Motion-aware location technology minimizes GPS use when you’re not moving, while on-demand data syncing reduces unnecessary network traffic—helping save both battery and mobile data.
