How do you check cosmetic ingredients before buying?

I'm building an app that reads the ingredient list from the label and scores it. While testing it on my girlfriend, I noticed she doesn't trust a single number: she wants to know why.

Curious how others do it. Do you google ingredients one by one, use Yuka or INCIDecoder, or just trust the brand? What would make you trust a score from an app?
