Bluesky - Building a Social Internet

Bluesky is building a protocol for public conversation that can make social networks work more like email, blogs, or phone numbers — the open systems that power the rest of our online lives.

Starting yesterday, you don’t have to be logged in to view posts on Bluesky! And also, they have a logo now! 🦋 Will Bluesky defeat Meta/Threads? Because X/Twitter is a dead as Myspace. Teehee.

@chrismessina ha X is actually the most active network in part of with the greatest sense of community. But I’m also on Bluesky cause I’m curious and I like the butterfly as a logo.

@chrismessina @heyderekj I am not sure if Bluesky will dethrone X, but I am ready to see what happens.

@chrismessina I really like the new logo. It just seems right and looks good on my home screen.

I upvoted just because the early days of an app are great when reach is still free. My favorite author is there so that helps. But having done social for 23 years, I can tell you the spammers have always eventually show up. Will Bluesky find a way to beat them or will ad dollars get in the way? The only way to find out is by joining. No, not paid to shill. Just reading sci-fi tonight.

@barce spammers may be a different problem on a decentralized platform that offers account self-verification.

It’s a carbon copy of old twitter, with a younger, different community. I will readily admit that X has turned into a really terrible user experience, but I’m not sure the old thing that worked up until Elon‘s takeover can launch again from scratch today. I do believe a new great social app will emerge. I think it’s going to have to look new and do something different to stick.

@gillianim On it and most def. striving to deliver, soon-er than later. Kind regards to you and yours. Merry Christmas in ascendance and discernment.

You still need an invite to access the site. But it's okay. I am using ActivityPub powered sites like Mastodon, Misskey, Pixelfed, WriteFreely & WordPress. I am looking forward to Threads & Flipboard joining the Fediverse!

I've been using Bluesky almost since its initial launch, long before I started using Product Hunt. My main two points in favor of Bluesky are that 1) it's as open and transparent as a social media website can be, and 2) Bluesky has an infrastructure for the developers to build around it, where I have met many good friends and even built a small thing of my own (https://github.com/xenohunter/bl...). Hope it gets the prominence, renown, and the magnitude of the network effect it deserves!

I think one of the biggest disservices anyone can do for themselves is try to compare social media sites like twitter, or bluesky or mastodon. After spending time on bluesky, you can see that bluesky is not trying to replace other sites, its doing something very different and has its own purpose. I get to see all of the content I want to see, control what I don't want to see and am not restricted to algorithms. Ive also not seen any journalists get silenced for expressing their views

The guys that make this app work their ass off, it's very much appreciated by many. They should be very proud of what they've accomplished. Congrats on launching the public-facing stage of Bluesky!

I finally got the invite installed the app and briefly followed some people. One still needs an app to access the service. Whether it winds up on the heap of other social network wanabees is debatable. Need a web UI for those who use computers more than mobile devices most of the day.

May I have an invite code?
