How to find exactly where the sun will set from your spot

by•

The sun doesn't set in the same place all year. Over the year the sunset point swings a long way along the horizon, so a building or ridge that frames it in June won't in December. To plan a shot:

1. Pick the exact spot you'll stand, not just the town.

2. Find the sun's bearing at sunset for your date, and its path in the last hour, when the light is best.

3. Check what's on that bearing from your spot: a landmark, a gap between buildings, water.

4. Note golden hour and blue hour times; the best colour is often after the sun is gone.

5. Choose your focal length. A long lens makes the sun large behind a distant subject; a wide one fits the sky.

Asterfold draws the sun's real path for any place and date on a sky dome, coloured by golden hour, blue hour and twilight, calculated offline. Save your exact spot, aim with a first-person horizon and a 14 to 200 mm lens, and see the dates the sun sets inside your frame. No account.

What's a sunset alignment you've been waiting for?
