Interesting.. I have a heap of AWS credits leftover from a Startup Weekend victory which expire at the end of the month, and which we're not really using for anything... and I was looking to move my mail servers to something a bit more robust than WHM/Cpanel. Maybe this will be a good fit.
Why would amazon come out with what appears to be a feature parody email client?

They're probably looking for ways to service the segment between basic email services from hosting providers and the O365 full featured services. For a startup just getting up and running and using AWS there is something to be said for sourcing everything from Amazon and getting your email from them too. Am watching with interest how this goes.
