I built Abakada.org because I saw firsthand how cost shuts Filipino students out of a digital world they deserve to be part of. As an open source advocate and IT professional based in the UAE, I watched students back home, especially those in provincial areas, spend hours searching online for software alternatives only to hit paywalls or stumble onto unsafe downloads. That frustrated me deeply. I believe a student in a remote municipality in the Philippines deserves the same digital opportunities as one in the city, so I created a free curated hub of over 1,000 open source tools across 45 categories, from office productivity and graphic design to development, communication, and research, so no one has to choose between affording software and completing their schoolwork. The approach was simple but intentional. Instead of leaving students to search on their own and risk pirated or malicious downloads, I compiled verified, legal, community supported alternatives in one organized place. I also added Learning Paths to help users not just find the right tools but actually know how to use them and where to start, making the experience more guided and practical.
