56k.rip - Log on like it's 1997. A dial-up desktop in your browser

by•
A 1997 family computer that runs in your browser. Double-click Dial-Up Networking, hit Connect, and sit through the whole call: dial tone, ringing, the handshake screech, then the slow-loading web. Inside: a start page, mail, chat rooms with real people, Painter, Minefield, Patience, pinball and a small web ring to wander. There's a Mac System 7 version too, at . Free. No sign-up. Sound on.

Hey Product Hunt. I built this over the summer as a passion project. I missed the old internet: the wait, the noise, the feeling of going somewhere. So I rebuilt it the way it felt, not just the way it looked. The modem actually dials, the Mac version has its own PPP app, and the pages load at modem speed on purpose. Think of it as a theme park, not a museum. Everything runs in the browser. No accounts, nothing to install. The chat rooms are real people, moderated. I'd love to hear what you remember, and what breaks. Turn your sound on.
