PRODUCT HIGHLIGHT
Oh hi, AI in Google Search

Oh, to have been a fly on the wall for the preparations that must’ve gone into this year’s edition of Google's highly anticipated I/O developer conference...

Of the many exciting announcements, let’s zero in on the release of the updated version of Google’s large language model (LLM), PaLM 2 — soon to be accessible to makers and developers via the PaLM API.

PaLM 2 is also the LLM behind another of I/O’s big announcements: the addition of generative AI results to Google Search, which they’re calling ‘AI snapshots,’ available on some (not all) search results to users who opt in to the ‘Search Generative Experience.’

As David Pierce reports for the Verge, this long-awaited answer to Microsoft’s Bing AI is kind of a big deal: “Google is putting AI front and center in the most valuable real estate on the internet: its existing search results.”

Users can also experience PaLM 2 by using Google’s chatbot, Bard, which is now open to everyone, even if you weren’t on the waitlist. Bard’s LLM was recently switched from LaMDA to PaLM 2, which Google called “a much more capable model.”

What do you think, will PaLM 2 and the API release be enough to reestablish Google’s edge over the market and compete, for example, with OpenAI’s GPT-4?

It’s an AIrms race
