What would you prefer before using a new product?

I'd prefer a free trial. But before we launched new product we gave all material to the group of volunteers and we asked them if they would be interesting in testing it for free, and we got their feedback. So, it actually was kind of like private product tour, but that worked for my product. However, it doesn't quite work for me, when I'm about to be a user of something.
