At least for SaaS products, marketing and product design often go hand in hand. As a product marketer you get a deep understanding of the pain points of users which is helpful in design.
Moreover, many SaaS products build marketing features into their products (sharing, referrals, public projects, etc); this means as a marketing expert you can get a seat at the table of product design.
