Especially if you have high competition.

I guess there will be many layers to this, but sticking to following fundamentals should help - 1. Developing progressive content, guiding the user from prospecting to decision making 2. Focus on customer onboarding - often overlooked and compromised by many. Emails, on product guides, splash screens, knowledge base, tutorials - all have to be in sync and should help the user drive forward 3. Reduce the time to value - if you do above 2 points right, you are reducing the time to value for the user - faster adoption meaning faster results for them, and for business it means faster conversion 4. Post-purchase customer journey - most startups often stop at pre-purchase and purchase customer journey. It is equally important to have a well-defined post-purchase customer journey and aligned content strategy 5. Proactive customer outreach/support in the first 30-45 days 6. Community - user will subscribe for the product, but could stay for the community. Bonus if you have a tiered community.

I think engaging onboarding will help with user engagement and retention. Keep them hooked to your product by giving them what they need, and all along, work on building a relationship. PLG and sales need to work together for better revenue generation. Providing a unique user experience is the most effective way to distinguish your product from competitors.
