Building Gmail-first Kanban + CRM tools

About

I’m a Dutch entrepreneur building Tooling Studio, a set of lightweight Chrome extensions for people who run their day in Google Workspace. Our first product is Kanban Tasks, a simple Kanban board that works inside Gmail and Google Workspace. We’re now launching Sales CRM, a lightweight CRM that lives in your Gmail sidebar and starts from Google Contacts. It’s been in beta, and we’re making it official with this launch. We’re also introducing Tooling Studio MCP (private early access), which lets MCP-compatible AI assistants connect to Tooling Studio and take actions in your Tasks and CRM using plain language, with your existing permissions. I’m here to ship in public, learn from other makers, and build tools that feel easy to use every day.

When Does a Product Become Too Complex to Understand?

There s a point where products stop being fully understandable.

Too many features
Too many dependencies
Too much history

And decisions start getting made with partial context.

The reality of building on MCP: Is the friction worth it?

We ve spent the last few months moving our Google Workspace tools over to the Model Context Protocol (MCP). While the potential for 'agentic' workflows is huge, but the friction of working on the edge of a new protocol is very real.

For those who haven't dived in yet, the biggest hurdle we found was the Remote vs. Local setup, rather than the protocol itself. Most tutorials focus on local command-line installs, but for a production-ready SaaS, you have to build for remote MCP servers. This requires a completely different approach to authentication and persistent state that the current docs don't fully cover yet.
