About

Product designer since 2020, from LA to the Silicon Valley! I've been designing my own consumer products on and off since then, but couldn't find anything I wanted to commit to until Retrocodex: Stuff You Learned Wrong. It was inspired by a prompt on a viral social media post. I committed to making the site after I saw an Instagram comment on the post that said "I know I'm living life with an outdated operating system". I didn't want myself or anybody else to have that. I hope you enjoy the site and make an account to join the community of Unlearners! I'd love to know what myth bothers you most that's on the site -- if it's not there, please submit it!

The thought you keep circling, what is it usually about?

Building Hayley has meant reading a lot of research on how people process decisions out loud.

The patterns that come up most: a relationship that needs a conversation you keep avoiding. A business decision that's already made but won't stop reopening. A version of yourself you're not sure you're living up to.

Curious what it is for the people in this community. Not looking for details, just the category.

What marketing strategies do you consider unethical, and which ones do you consider brilliant?

During today s standup meeting, an idea came up about improving our presence on Reddit (for LLM search visibility and similar reasons).

One of the suggestions was to look for high-karma accounts and possibly buy them to appear more credible when posting and mentioning the product within the posts/comments. It s a tactic, sure, but to me it already feels like it crosses an ethical line. I sometimes worry they can seriously damage a company s reputation.

How do you distinguish AI content from real, human-made content?

AI is incredibly good, I d even say almost perfect.

And for many people, that uniformity of perfect templates is starting to feel annoying.
