🎨 Do solo makers need a UI/UX designer?

For solo makers, wearing every hat is almost unavoidable - developer, marketer, support, product and often designer too.

AI makes this even easier now. You can generate UI pretty quickly, but a lot of products end up relying on consistent, polished AI-generated solutions rather than something truly unique or thoughtfully designed for their specific product.

How do you fix bad UI/UX when you're the only one on the project?

Every side project I build hits the same wall. The code works, the idea is fine, and then the interface makes it look unfinished. No designer, no budget for one.

So I'm curious how other solo builders actually handle this:

What's your design process when there's no designer? Component libraries, copying layouts you like, AI tools, something else?
How do you find out the UX is bad in the first place? I can tell when something feels off, but I can't articulate why so I end up changing colors instead of fixing the real problem.

What’s the best design app? A lot of people I know use the Figma for design now, especially for UI/UX design. It s easy to use, there s a lot of different stuff, and it s pretty easy to figure out. But I ve also heard about Sketch and Zeplin as good alternatives to Figma. So what s the best solution for design right now for newbies, as well as advanced?

From UI Design to Product Design👋 Hi, PH community

Hi everyone! I m Vsevolod, a Product Designer with 2+ years of experience.

A few years ago, I started my journey as a UI Designer. I enjoyed creating clean and visually appealing interfaces, but over time I realized I was much more interested in what happens behind them. Why do users behave the way they do? How can we make their experience better? At some point, I realized I wanted to do more than just design screens. I wanted to help shape products by generating and validating new ideas, analyzing user feedback, improving existing features, and introducing new ones.That s what led me to Product Design.

Today, what I enjoy most is researching user needs, brainstorming ideas, thinking through product functionality, validating hypotheses, and collaborating with the team to grow a product. One of the most rewarding moments is when an idea you suggested actually works. When users start using a feature and say, Wow, this is really useful! Those moments remind me why I love product design.

We re now living in the age of AI, and it s a field I m genuinely excited about. I want to keep growing in this space, work on AI-powered products, experiment with new ideas, and continue learning every day.
