WebCrate helps you organize and share links, articles and more from around the web in a central place. It's open source & can be easily self-hosted thanks to your own personal cloud in Deta Space. It's more than just a bookmarking tool.

šŸ‘‹ Hey ProductHunt (and @__tosh, thanks for hunting me)! For some time, I was struggling to find a nice tool to help me organize things I find around the web. I wanted something simple and easy to use, not some outdated or bloated piece of software. After failing to find a fit, I decided to just build my own bookmarking tool called WebCrate. After working on it for the last 2 months it became a bit more than just another bookmarking tool and I'm happy to finally share it with the world! Here are some of the key parts of WebCrate: ⚔ Fast, minimal, and intuitive interface. I wanted something simple to use which helps me to never lose a link again thanks to a powerful quick search. šŸ“‚ Organize your links with crates. A crate can be thought of a collection of links which relate to the same topic. Use a crate for a particular project you are working on, a list of useful resources or organize anything else you like! šŸ”® Make your crate public and share it with the entire world! See this crate as an example. You can also subscribe to any public crate and access its links directly through your own dashboard. šŸ” Everything runs in its own sandboxed environment for each user thanks to Deta Space. You get your own instance of WebCrate on the internet for you to access from all your devices! As a developer, I can't touch your instance — you remain in control of your data and updates to WebCrate. šŸ‘Øā€šŸ’» WebCrate is also open source, report any issues you find, suggest features, or contribute directly with code on GitHub To learn more visit webcrate.app or install WebCrate directly on Deta Space! I hope you find WebCrate useful, and I'm looking forward to your feedback! ā¤

@__tosh @betahuhn I have had this same problem, from evernote to bookmark tools, notes, textedit, then to Notion. I have never found the perfect tool - keen to try this one out!
Maximilian Schiller
@__tosh @stewup I had a similar journey. Hopefully WebCrate will be that tool as it is for me!

Looks cool. That sharing feature got me interested. Here is how I currently store links more general links - Chrome's bookmark tool (it does what i need) Recipes - Pinterest - I really don't like it, it's slow and sharing is difficult to non-pinterest users So I think I found my first use case, my recipe collection, viewable to everyone. But what do you think are the features that set WebCrate apart from the rest?
Maximilian Schiller
@christoph_loewenherz Thanks, great that you found a use case for it! Hit me up when you make the crate public, always looking for delicious recipes šŸ˜‹ Regarding WebCrate itself, one big reason I decided to build it was that I didn't like the interface of other bookmarking tools. WebCrate's is simple and tries to get out of your way. It lets you focus on the links itself while still giving you the functionality you need. WebCrate also runs on Deta Space which means that you get your own sand-boxed instance of it. There is no way for me to access it and it keeps running even if I disappear. Another thing that sets it apart is that you can add your own context to each link. Change its title, add a custom description -- It can adapt to your needs.

This is awesome, I've been needing something like this
Maximilian Schiller
@preeti_chovoor Now you have it :D - Jokes aside, thanks! Let me know how you like it!

Tested it today out of curiosity. I am directed to Deta Space to install their app, but as soon as I have completed that task, there's nowhere to go. I am left on Deta Space with no indication of where to go. If I go back to WebCrate and try to start again I am once again offered to install Deta Space. Endless loop. How do I move forward?
Maximilian Schiller
@robingood Hey Robin, sorry that you experienced some issues and for the late response! Are you still having issues installing WebCrate on Space? If the app successfully installed you should be able to access is from the Space library. Feel free to contact me if you have any other issues!
Robin Good
@betahuhn Hi Max, I wish it was so. Unfortunately I have given up trying since I could not make it work. Now I have tried again, and recorded a short video to show you what I see. https://share.vidyard.com/watch/...?
Maximilian Schiller
@robingood Oh that’s not supposed to happen, I can see why you are confused, I would be as well! Thanks for taking the time to record that video! Normally it should install the app within a few seconds and it will appear in the library for you to use. This is unfortunately out of my control as WebCrate just runs on Deta Space and uses it as hosting. I can’t do anything about this. I will contact the Deta Team and let them know of your issue and see if we can resolve this. Will get back to you if anything comes up! I hope we can get this fixed soon so you can try out WebCrate (if you are still interested). Sorry again!
Robin Good
@betahuhn Problem solved. One of your staff, also by the name Max, offered a plain and simple solution which worked right out of the box. He suggested to click Install only once the name "robingood" (my username) had appeared on the top left of my screen. I did so and everything went fine.

@betahuhn Now my key question is: what makes webcrate different from the many other similar link collecting tools like Staykeen, elink, shelf, basket, wakelet, etc.? I am particularly interested in this area (tools to collect and organize info) and I did not see anything specific so far that make me say: "Oh, this is interesting." For example most of these other tools, do not allow you to work with other people who can contribute to the same crate. This is a powerful use case in many situations, like newsrooms or distributed teams preparing resources for a newsletter or a presentation. Curious to know what you have coming up as a key differentiator.

WebCrate extension is worth using for the browser; but it has limited features. Hope to see more features in future.
Maximilian Schiller
@ankit_prakash1 Definitely! Have a few ideas for the extension which I will work on over the next few weeks. Stay tuned!
