WandelBar is a free, open-source macOS utility that customizes the wallpaper behind the system menu bar without replacing or overlaying it. Add blur, tint, gradients, textures, shadows and presets, use different styles per Space, and discover community-made presets in the online gallery.

GPT-6 Astra was used extensively while building and refining WandelBar’s Community Gallery and preset-sharing workflow. It helped iterate on the gallery architecture, import/export flow, validation logic, edge cases, and UX around discovering and installing community presets. I used it as part of an AI-assisted development workflow while manually testing behavior, reproducing bugs, and deciding how the feature should work.

Hey Product Hunt!
I made WandelBar after getting annoyed by how the transparent menu bar in macOS Tahoe looked on some wallpapers.
Rather than drawing another layer over the menu bar, WandelBar modifies the wallpaper underneath it. That makes it possible to add blur, tint, gradients, textures, shadows and transitions while leaving the native macOS menu bar itself untouched.
It also supports:
- different settings per Space
- built-in and custom presets
- an online Community Gallery for sharing presets
- signed and notarized builds
- Homebrew installation
WandelBar is free and open source.
The project was developed with significant AI assistance; I focused on the product behavior, testing, iteration and bug finding.
I’m especially interested in feedback on different wallpapers, multi-display setups and anything that feels awkward or breaks.
