Thanks for hunting @hnshah! 🎈
Since launching Volley’s web app at the end of June (http://www.producthunt.com/tech/...), we’ve been hard at work to bring the experience to mobile.
Just like on the web, Volley for iPhone lets you post requests about a startup, programming, or design challenge you're facing and connect with relevant people who want to help. Our goal is for Volley to be top-of-mind when you’re looking for help from a real person, so naturally, it’s crucial that you’re able to ask for help when you’re on the go.
We’re really proud of the fact that the iOS and web experiences work together seamlessly. This required a lot of tricky API work from @brendanlynch. Also, in the last two months, it wasn’t easy at times moving the web product forward at the same time as iOS - a huge shoutout to @davehariri for balancing the design of these two at once, as well as to Cory for his great execution. Finally, and most importantly, we’re super proud of Dan (@Cowfaboo) who is leading the development of Volley for iPhone and who continues to do a fantastic job.
Mobile unlocks a lot of opportunities for Volley not possible on the web, which we're excited to continue to build on. We’d love your feedback and would be happy to answer any questions you guys have!

@mimurchison I remember when you were just starting this off and told me about it on the Queens Startup Summit bus some time ago. It has come a long way and I'm honoured to be part of the product since early on, congrats!
Volley has been the fastest way to get quick help on things. Now with the iPhone app, it's even quicker to get the help you need.

I'm a Volley fan and have dropped in from time to time to help others and ask for help. The community already has a personality of its own -- pretty good for being for so young, right? The category-based knowledge is loose at best but works fine for now. It encourages browsing, which I like. You'll find out that you know more than you think you know about a lot of things: who doesn't like that? Minor quibble: the email-based authentication system drives my batty. My Volley data is not PHI or financial data. Can someone recommend a good auth API to these folks? Endgame: we've seen a lot of these Q&A apps and sites over the last few years. Something about Volley has a little more soul than most. I would be delighted to see it succeed.
@kkdub thanks for your feedback Kelly. Regarding the sign up flow right now: I completely agree with your quibble. Creating a sign in system with far less friction is a priority 😄

Congrats on the great execution @mimurchison and all the team. I work on www.impossible.com and it's great to see this space getting more crowded. One of the challenges we've been facing is a way to match people. How to know that John can help Sarah? We decided to focus on skills, what is your plan?
@ugo_alves I'm speaking from the Volley user's perspective. It seems like their plan and current strategy is to have 'categories' where you can view people's request. The two actions you can take - either reply to a request or 'Volley' it to someone you know who may be able to help out.
@ugo_alves, @applecider_ said it perfectly. We're focused right now on making it easy for people to find requests they care about and to make it easy for people to share relevant requests with friends. I'm sure there is plenty more that Volley and Impossible could share and learn from each other!
I think having the iPhone push notifications will really help to build returning users - not only for their own questions they post, but also to be notified when other events happen ie. other people that are in their network post a question or if a certain topic they are passionate about comes up.
Looking forward to trying it!
Congrats Volley!
@samyj13 Thanks Sam! We put a lot of effort into our notifications layer -- @brendanlynch designed a really cool "heart beat" system that notifies you of your Volley activity through whichever app you used last. This means that you'll get a desktop notification if you've got Volley open on your computer and not a push notification on your phone. Conversely, if you last used Volley on your iPhone, we'll send you a push notification and not a desktop notification. In either case, if the notification isn't dismissed or acted upon after about 5 minutes, we'll send you an email notification. The whole system works to ensure that you're never being notified of stuff you've already seen.
@samyj13 We take privacy and security very seriously. Having login happen over email is the best way we can ensure a secure authentication without relying on other services and without storing passwords. It's awkward sometime's and we want to offer more than just email sign in in the future, but for now it's better than storing passwords in a database. Thanks for your question :-)
