Locks distracting apps (Instagram, TikTok, YouTube) behind a translation question. Two seconds of vocab practice every time you'd doom-scroll. Spaced repetition, multiple languages, CEFR level filtering. Free with an optional Supporter tier.
Hey PH - maker here. 👋
I built Vocablock because I caught myself in the same loop every night: pick up the phone "just to check the time," surface 30 minutes deep in TikTok, and realise I hadn't opened a language app in three weeks despite Spanish being supposedly my goal.
So I made the phone interrupt itself. Every time you open an app on your lock list, Vocablock pops up a translation question. Get it right and your app opens. Get it wrong twice and it shows you the answer + a short pause before letting you continue.
What's under the hood:
Spaced repetition — words you miss come back faster
CEFR level filtering (A1–C2) so you study what's appropriate for your level
Cooldown options so it's not nagging you every 10 seconds
All your data (word bank, study history, app-lock list) lives in a local database — nothing leaves your phone except AdMob banner ads on the free tier
The beta: ran a closed test with family and friends. Two real bugs surfaced: quizzes were firing while phones were face-down on a desk (battery drain), and the success animation made the app feel slower than competitors like MathLock. Both fixed in the version that ships today.
The pricing: free. There's an optional $20/year Supporter tier that turns off the banner ads and uses a smoother overlay window instead of a full-screen quiz. No upsells inside the quiz itself.
What I'd love feedback on: does the lock screen feel hostile or motivating? I tried to keep it gentle (no shaming, no streak guilt), but I'm a sample size of one.
