What do you think? …

Varin Kant
Ever tried calculating calories based on your activities and ended up more confused than when you started? I know the feeling. That's why I built this free web app. Traditional methods of estimating calories often put folks like me in a pickle. Picture this: you've got a desk job (hello, sitting for hours) but you're also clocking in those daily steps and sweating it out at the gym. Many calorie counters just can't handle that combo. TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) is made up of different components, and it's super insightful to see a breakdown. It can be an eye-opener to realize that activities might not burn as many calories as we think. A lot of us might feel that a killer workout equals major calories torched, but the reality is a bit more complex (see Methodology). I suspect there's a bit of mind trickery going on. We equate hard work and sweat with big calorie drops, but our daily calorie burn is influenced by so many factors. That's what this app is all about: showing the bigger picture. Dive in, play around, and see for yourself!

I try to consume around 3000-5000 calories per day because I am trying to get yolked. What is your goal, Mr. Varin?
Ryan Hoover
@kingromstar daannnggg, are you working out and burning a ton of calories? At that rate, you should be gaining a ton of weight fast.
Varin Kant
@kingromstar mainly just maintenance tbh, I can flucutate quite abit if I don't pay attention to my diet. I wish i was eating 3000-5000 cal per day though

@rrhoover errday

@kingromstar @rrhoover it's probably more about their crazy metabolism. One would have to spend up to 40 hours a week to burn off enough calories with this high of intake
Ryan Hoover
@kingromstar incredible. I wish I could eat that much without getting chunky.
Ryan Hoover
I like the simplicity and UX, @varin. Here are my results:

@rrhoover thanks ryan. I mainly built this for the UI/UX and the problem just happened to be something that interested me as someone who counts their calories. Go on any reddit thread about counting calories and you'll notice debates and misnomars around these components and how they should be calculated.

I always doubted calculations that are based on an abstract activity level (“very active”) and I never believed the energy expenditure data calculated by my phone/fitness tracker from gym visits, cycling, walking the website is neat and the detailed calculation looks quite promising! Will give it a try this weekend Oh, and congrats on the launch! 🎉

The website looks and feels nice (the only minor issue I had is some longer activity names not fitting into the field fully), the calculation seems to be extremely precise. The amount of calories to achieve a deficit is within 50 cals away from the number I came up with myself from extensively tracking my intake, monitoring the weight over a long period of time and then adjusting the intake. I'd suggest extending the final intake numbers with multiple deficit options: minimal deficit, kinda a normal one (500 kcals) and aggressive cutting

The difference in activity levels between my day 'on' vs my day 'off' has always been pretty stark, it's true! I'm not training right now, but I'm meaning to bit the bullet and start kickboxing again this winter — bookmarking this for then. Congrats on the launch!
Varin Kant
@rob_chap thanks rob, I anticipate you'll have the same problem I did which is that doing kickboxing (tennis for me) twice a week will torch a bunch of calories for that day but it is kinda hard to parse this in the full context, which is why I prompt the user to exercise activites in a given week and then average it out.

Such a beautiful and useful app. Congratulations ✨

This app might be useful especially to us people who workout to trace our daily calorie intake. Congrats on your launch.
